A domain name is a web address consisting of a website name and a domain name extension. Just like a physical address helps people find a specific place, the purpose of a domain is to help visitors find a website. Without domain names, users can only access websites using Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. Thus, it is important for the business’s success, promotion, and protection. More than this, domain name is an online-identity and brand. Domain names were developed to make it easy for people to find things on the Internet.
What is the need of domain name?
A Domain name is identity of the business on web. To promote business on the web, it is highly recommended to have one. Worldwide, people can visit website online and can know about one’s business through their site.
What are the different components of domain name?
A domain name is a combination of two or more words. The last word is called Top Level Domain. A Top-Level Domain (TLD) is the suffix that is attached to the end of a domain name. For instance, in the domain name, diginame.in ".com" is the TLD. To the left of TLD comes Second Level Domain (SLD). e.g. in CSC.org', CSC is the second level domain, '.org is the TLD.
What is the different between TLDs i.e. .in, .org.in, and .net.in?
There is no significant difference between the 3 TLDs. These are just a few options and one can avail all of them as 3 separate domain registrations. Now, one can also register biz, info, .us, .cc, .tv, .co.in, etc. domains. Thus it becomes easier for customer to get a particular domain name that was already registered in the previously available TLDs.
Who can register for a Domain name?
Any entity such as individuals, organizations, internet service providers (ISPs), corporate, resellers, etc. in any type of profession can register a domain to get recognition on the Internet.
Who is a registrant?
The registrant is the individual or organization who registers a domain name. This person, after certain conditions are met, and upon payment of the registration fees, holds the right to use that specific domain name for a specified period of time. This person is the legal entity bound by the terms of the Registration Agreement. The Registrant is in technical terms Second Level Domain (SLD) holder.
Can the name of registrant for the Domain Name be changes once it has been registered?
Yes, once user register their domain name through CSC, all modifications in the domain details can be done by just logging into client interface. By clicking on the Modify Domain option against their domain details changes can be incorporated.
What are the 3 contact fields Admin, Technical and Billing that are required while registering for domain name?
The contact fields as Admin, Technical and Billing list the contact details of the people to be contacted for each of the three functions relating to the Domain Name.
Can user change information in the contacts field?
By clicking on Modify Domain option after logging into the client interface, user can make changes in contact fields Admin, Technical and Billing at later stage.
Will a change in address of contacts make any difference in working conditions of domain?
No, modification in address doesn’t make any difference in working of domain. CSC gives user total control over their domain. User is owner of all domains registered through CSC and they also reserve the right to change any Domain details as per their requirements and convenience.
Who is a Registrar?
A Registrar is an organization that registers domain names on behalf of a Registrant. Registrars must receive accreditation from ICANN and be technically certified by the Registry before they can register domain names in the Registry.
The Internet corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a technical coordination body for the Internet created in October 1998 by a broad coalition of the Internet's business, technical, academic, and user communities. ICANN coordinates the assignment of the following identifiers that must be globally unique for the Internet to function:
• Internet domain names
• IP address numbers
• Protocol parameter and port numbers
• ICANN coordinates the stable operation of the Internet's root server system.

What is an IP address?
An IP address is a numeric address associated with every computer on the Internet to identify its location. The Internet Protocol (IP) is the method or protocol by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet. Each computer (known as a host) on the Internet has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the Internet.
What is Domain Name System?
Domain Name System (DNS) translates alphanumeric domain name to its numeric IP address that a computer understands. The DNS is the way that Internet domain names are located and translated into Internet Protocol addresses.

What is Uniform Resource Locator?
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the address of a file (resource) accessible on the Internet. The type of resource depends on the Internet application protocol. Using the World Wide Web's protocol, the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), the resource can be an HTML page, an image file, a program such as a common gateway interface application or Java applet, or any other file supported by HTTP. The URL contains the name of the protocol required to access the resource, a domain name that identifies a specific computer on the Internet, and a hierarchical description of a file location on the computer. An HTTP URL can be for any Web page, not just a home page, or any individual file.
For how long a user can register a Domain Name?
User can register a domain name from a minimum of one year to a maximum of ten years.
How can term of Domain Name Registration be extended or renewed?
To extend domain name registration user have to log into their client interface and place an order for the domain extension from there. User will have to click on the Extend Domain option against their domain name. If domain is registered with other Registrar, then domain has to be transferred and then it can be renewed.
How long does it take to register a Domain Name through Diginame scheme?
As soon as payment is received at Diginame, Domain Name will be registered. DNS mapping of the domain takes up to 48 hrs to fully take effect and show up on the query of other registrars.
What is the Registry?
Registry is an entity that receives Domain Name System (DNS) information from domain name Registrars, inserts that information into a centralized database and publishes the information on the internet so that domain names can be found by users around the world via application such as the World Wide Web and email.
What is redemption grace period?
Redemption grace period (RGP) is a service that allows the registrar to restore .IN domain name that has been unintentionally deleted. RGP is a 30-day period that begins after a registrar requests that the registry delete a domain name. When a domain name is in RGP, its status is listed as Pending, Delete, Restorable, and Hold. When a domain name enters RGP, it is removed from the .IN zone file. As a result, any Internet services served by the domain name will be disabled (e.g., e-mail or a Web site). The registrant must act immediately if he or she wants to restore the domain name via sponsoring Domain Registrar. After the 30-day RGP, the domain name enters the Redemption Hold Period (RHP).
What is Redemption Hold Period (RHP)?
If a registrar deletes a domain name and does not request that the domain name be restored during the 30-day RGP, it enters RHP. RHP lasts for five days, and during this time domain name is locked and unable to be restored. After five days, it becomes available for re-registration. Once the domain name enters RHP, the prior registrant cannot request a restore. When a domain name is in RHP, its status is listed as Pending, Delete, Scheduled for Release, and Hold.
How does the user will know if their domain name is in RGP?
If a domain name is in RGP, the Status field will show the domain name as Pending, Delete, Restorable, and Hold.
Will domain still work if it is in RGP state?
No. Once a domain name is placed in RGP, no Internet services for that domain name will work.
Why domain name which is in RHP state can’t be restored?
Once the 30-day RGP for a domain name has passed, it cannot be restored. RHP serves as a notice period for registrars regarding the pending availability of the domain name.
Will a renewal fee be charged in addition to the RGP fee itself? Will user lose any time that remained on registration?
If the domain name has expired before it is deleted and enters RGP. If further it is restored, then registrar's account is debited for the RGP fee and the one-year renewal fee. If the domain name has not expired prior to deletion and entering RGP, and then it is restored, the registrar's account is debited the RGP fee, but the renewal fee is charged only if a renewal is requested explicitly or the domain was deleted within the 45-day auto-renew grace period. It is up to each registrar whether to charge the registrant for the renewal fee in addition to an RGP fee.
